Make Music To Get Girls

Last week I was asked if I would like to perform with the Lexie Mountain Boys at the Garnethill Multi-cultural Centre! I had no music ready or anything planned live, but I had a massive crush on Lexie and was sure this was a good(but creepy)way of meeting/having a chat with her. so I quickly made 10 minutes of Sci-Fi noisy stuff, planned on dressing up and getting my friend fi to do some of his wierd poetry and dancing while I played. However we were definetly not ready and this never happened.

I successfully got my chat with lexie though, and showed her and the rest of the girls around the West End of Glasgow. There all too nice, too nice even to have a crush on. It was a lovely day with nice food and amazing performances from everyone. The room in the multi cultural centre was like a community hall from the early 80's. With an awesome carpet, some horrible curtains and pictures of war veterans all over the walls. It felt like a party that your Mum would orgnasise for you when you were young.

So anyway, I have some weird unheard sci-fi/drone/noise stuff left that I really want to perform live. I don't have a name for this project yet and might make a few more tracks too.

Blog neglect

I used to love blogging, documenting my life and the things i find while browsing the net. I really don't know what has happened! I've not updated anything on here for over 3 months.

I am definetly going to be posting alot more over the next few months.

Well I'm now working for the flying duck (which is good fun) and run a night called Mumble club promoting experimental music around glasgow. Theres been 3 so far and all have been alot of fun. The next one is going to be on the 2nd of April at the Twisted Wheel. So far confirmed are Louts, Animals and War, The Radiation Line, and DJ sets by Yoko,Oh No! and GATR. I'll post the poster next week which will have all the details.

I'm heading down to london next week for Yes Way festival. I'm really excited about this, the line-up is amazing and the tickets are only £8

It's in a rad space called Auto-Italia - a massive, collaborative exhibition space and temporary studio, currently residing in a former car showroom in Peckham.

I'd definetly come along if your in london, even if your not the bus down is only £25 return from Glasgow.

I've decided as it's coming towards the end of the year to list my top 10 of things I did and liked. I've decided to start with my top 10 gigs. It's actually been quite hard remembering all the ones I attended but here's 10 that stick out.

Beef Dripping Part 2

A while ago I posted in this blog about a zine called beef dripping. The issue in question was called the age concern issue and covered loads of funny things about old people and what they get up to.

Quite a few people got back to me and wanted to here more. So here's another rad article.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WITCH

Dame Dillys has cracked down on crime in Rosey Hue by Lyme Hants since the year 1927 when she enrolled as it's first female police officer.

Dillys destroyer Dalrymple made her first arrest in the same year when little tommy tootles stole a farthings worth of pear drops from the Rosey Hue post office confectionary counter. Post arrest she was sent to a tribunal on evidence of gross violence and conduct unbecoming of a police officer and was dealt a severe warning from the local constabulary. Little Tommy, who died later from internal bleeding, was in Dame Dillys words "the worst trouble maker who needed a severe tonic", although the alleged three days of mental torture and extreme beating are no longer strictly acceptable. Dame Dilly fondly remembers the old style of policing: "in my day we didn't put sugar in the medicine, we administered it like an icy blast of divine retribution"

Heedless of her warning Dame Dilly continued on a rampage of senseless violence in the name of the law. In the cosy and crimeless surroundings of Rosey Hue, some villagers doubted the need of such vigorous law inforcement but Dillys' maintained that "there is never enough ointment to stave the flow of scum from the wound"

During the 2nd world war, in the absence of any men in the village, several arrests were made on the charge of prostitution, which many still believe were false accusations caused by Dillys', the bakers wife, was overheard at the harvest festival remarking on the subject. Two weeks hence Joan Simmons was found dazed and naked in a ditch outside the village with two broken legs and a bun stuffed in her mouth. She refused to give evidence.

There was much rejoicing in the village in 1982 when dillys' was elevated to damehood, as it was assumed that she would retire, though some feared she would, in retirement, start a vililgante movement. 26 years later Dame Dillys' bloody regime continues. Although housebound, due to decreased mobility, she continues to monitor "the gubbins that prowl our streets from her upstairs window

Lots of filling out and I don't think it was that accurate. I just made up a song to help my self identify things and got all the matching up right. It wouldn't matter if the pictures were of european americans or of animals or whatever. It passed some time today in college so I'd try taking it if your trying to get through a boring day.

The owl project

I read in this months issue of The Wire magazine about a strange noise/woodwork project called "The Owl Project". It started when 3 dudes sitting round a campfire decided to record owl sounds with a casio SK-1 and played the recording back to the owls, who then swooped down to see what was happening. By embedding circuit board into bits of trees they then invented their own instruments, The Ilog, The sound Lathe and The Log SK-1.

I quite enjoyed music weekly this week. It's the Guardians weekly podcast. The music wasn't so good but I enjoyed the chat and interviews.

Egadz

Not many people listen or take note when you reccomend bands or artists, but this guy is defiently worth checking out. He's a San Francisco Born Hip hop/experimental/electronic artist called Egadz. As far as I know he started out doing DJ battles and record digging like most hip hop producers, but his style and tracks really got to me. What really sets him apart though is his live shows and amazing skills with a drum machine/sampler.

There's no backing track, all the sounds are programmed onto the buttons and played in real time. It reminds me of Daedelus in a way. Both totally fast fingered live on their chosen equipment.

The century of self

Sunday was far too cold to go out. I spent all day in eating awesome soup, recovering from a long weekend and watching this.

It's called century of self and is by Adam Curtis. This is the third part and by far my favourite. This guy has been responsible for some of the best documentaries ever made.

Beef Dripping

I've actually enjoyed being in the last couple of nights. It's far too cold to go out, especially because I've lost 2 wooly hats in the past week and countless pairs of gloves. All I've been doing this week is sitting in drinking tea, browsing the internet and working on some stuff for the upcoming face Shred'r zine. Another past time of mine this winter is showing friends new items in my room over web cam.

Here's a still of me holding up an awesome zine called Beef Dripping. I don't have a clue who makes this or where it's made (I'm guess somewhere in Scotland) but I picked it up in Recoat Gallery for a few quid. The issue I'm holding up in the picture is called "Age Concern" and it's basically about old people and the funny things they do.

The person I showed it to asked me to read an article out, but the microphone on my lap top broke so I hand typed one.

Eco Nan

I'm still having babies, that's the first reason why I'm still young, 68 years young to be precise. One baby every two years since I was 50. All my young friends tell me I have a real spring in my step. You see age is nothing but a state of mind, nothing at all. I'malways looking for trainers on the internet and other dead cool things. T-in the park tickets? Phoarr!Don't they go fast. Goodness listen to my boundless enthusiasm and youthful exuberence, a lot of old people wouldn't get my style, but everyone has their own style. My sons gay and I don't even care! Thiscould be rotterdamn or anywhere, YEAH I love boogying in nightclubs, so watch out you young hunks....we could rent a room in a youth hostel, I'm all body and spirit. I refused a hip replacement operation; I know with herbal remedies my hip will replace it's self! I don't eat placentas I blend them with grapefruit and make smoothies. My children are all such individuals free spirits, just like me. So it came as a bit of a shock when the child welfare people came around and took them away from me.

There was a rad drawing and picture on the page but it didn't come up clear when i took a picture of it.

I'm pretty phsyced on some stuff this week. One of these being a film by Suzie Hazlewood called "Bigga Than Ben".

Looks awesome, I think i'll be checking this out on friday at the GFT. It's only £3 at the 1pm showing.

Made in 1978, Rockers features some of the outstanding reggae musicians of the time in cameo roles as themselves: Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall, Gregory "Jah Tooth" Isaacs, Jacob "Jakes" Miller, Robbie Shakespeare, Kiddus I, Burning Spear, Big Youth and Dillinger.

I love the walks. I found myself recrating the rockers reggae walk around my room today in time with the music.

Miranda July

I Purchased my first item from the internet in almost 5 months today. I hate buying from the internet. I'm always scared that I'll loose out on money or that whatever I buy will be the wrong size, colourm shape etc. But I changed my ways and decided to buy the book "No One Belongs Here More Than You" by Miranda July.

It's a collection of stories by the wonderful Miranda July. She's a rad film maker, performance arist and writer from california.

I can't wait for my book to come. It better not be all ripped up or take 4 years to arrive (I really don't trust pay-pal, for no reason at all)

Digiki podcast

I just finished listening to this months awesome digiki podcast. As usual the polypunk podcast features tracks from all over the world and from every genre of music. Lots of jazz, experimental world electronics and even an awesome kanye west tune thats mixed in with this hypnotic traditional japanese sounding tune. Was a perfect listen while I done my Sunday night blog browsing.

This is what digiki says about the podcast:

It took me a while to complete this one but here it is at last. Yes it’s about people and places, but also about the disappearance of the selector/DJ: let the music speaks for itself, etre en retrait. It’s Polypunk, what else could it be? The best of Portland

Recently XLR8R TV have been doing a series of videos on the happenings in Portland, Oregon. This includes all the rad bands, illustrators, things to do etc. As usual XLR8R have done well, choosing the right people to interview and asking the right questions.

I especially liked the episode on E*rock. That's probably because I love everything he's ever been involved with. All his music, illustration, animations and Audio Dreggs.

Sick Indoor Park

I went out a drive with my friend Billy today and we came across this sick little in dorr park in the middle of knowhere. Well it's in a little gym hall somewhere in Blantyre. It's run by the people that do the Radworks summer skate lessons. It was full of rad little kids asking loads of questions and only cost a pound to get in. I've skated quite a few DIY gym hall style parks before and there usually slidy and far too cramped. The layout of this park was pretty good and you can move the ramps about as you pleased. The ground was definetly coated with something that made it not as slidy as other gym halls. It's in a place called Calderhouse in Blantyre. If you live with in a few miles drive you should check it out. It's pretty hard to try find on a bus too. And maybe then not worth it. The only other indoor park near me is Unit 23 in Dumbarton. It's over priced and always too cold. As fa as I know it's open Saturday and Sunday From 10am - 5pm.

It's not worth invting all your friends there though as it might get a little cramped.

Berlin

I'm going to be in Berlin at the start of December with my Mum for a few days. I plan on seeing ratatat and drumcorpse. I thing Gtuck might have a show around the time I'm there. If you know of anything good to do in Berlin please tell me. I'm constantly on the Momus blog, he's always talking about rad stuff happening in Berlin. The flights havn't been booked yet and I've still not got a passport. Really need to start preparing for it. I'm really phsyced about seeing ratatat though.

Been slacking with posts

Not been well for the past few days. The cold and horrible weather is taking it's toll on me. Me and Jinty have made a start on the face shred'r zine. The first issue is on empolyment and unemployment. It's going to be reversable. Jinty is doing the drawings, I'm going to be doing the words and we're both doing the brains. We're hoping to have at least 50 copies printed by mid november. I've already done a few articles and Jinty's drawings look super rad. It'll be free. We're going to try leave them about places in Glasgow. Like Recoat Gallery, Mono, Stereo, the Flying Duck and some other good places. Basically anywhere people will let us leave them.

As far as I know the club night me and stevie(rug cutting)are putting on is still happening around February. It's going to be called Mumble Club I think. We're looking for a venue before February though. So if you know of anywhere let us know.

The Very Best

I found out about a new musical collaboration today between dance duo radioclit and an east african singer called Esau Mwamwaya. This East African man called Esau Mwamwaya moved to London in 1999 and ran a second hand shop in East London up until recently. The story goes that Radioclit have a studio on the same street and went in to buy a bike. They thought Esau was rad so invited him to a flat-warming party. They realised that he had an amazing voice and decided to work together.

Just now there working on a full length album but they put out a free mixtape/bootleg album. Esau sings over remixed tracks by m.i.a. and that theme from True Romance. It has such a nice feeling to this album. I've been listeing to it all day. It sort of reminds me of "Graceland" by Paul Simon.

It's definetly worth a listen. They've titled this collaboration The Very Best. And it's probably the very best free album I've ever got legally. It feels so much better when the albums free and you don't have to illegally download it.

Yesterday I went and checked out The Front Row exhibition at Recoat Gallery.

High Fashion and Illustration come together in an exhibition featuring new work from eight illustrators and new fashion designs inspired by the classic couture looks.

Each artist has created work inspired by the designs of seven internationally renowned fashion houses – Chanel, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Zac Posen, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Christian Dior.

sorry that the mixtape I promised yesterday has taken so long. I have the tracklisting and started recording it. I just don't seem to have an hour free in the day to do it. I've switched computers just now so I can't even do it with this free time I have just now. The tracks on it are some of my favourites just now. I have the week off and nothing to do. I need to try budget my money and only spend money on the essentials. So far I've oly been out once this week. I'm not quite sure if anything is happening, this week is going to end up being a total waste. We're going to head and see yoko oh no play tomorrow at the 13th note and then go see Bean Butler play at Stereo on Saturday. If theres anything else happening in glasgow let me know.

After having my Ipod stolen on the bus I'm back to using my Mums old portable CD player. I'm going to make a mix CD for the bus too college and back so I don't have to carry a load of CD's. I can't get enough of his animations(it's lachlan from gay against you). I've always been a fan of his drawings but just recently he's been getting into animations too.

Best live bands are from Glasgow

Most of my favourite band to watch Live have came from Glasgow. Well at least those band seem to be the ones that stick in my head. For example I'll never get tired of watching Gay vs You rolling about the ground in ridiculous home made costumes playing noisy pop. I think it's because they always involve the crowd in their performances. At a one show I actually sang most of a song as Joe and Lachlan rolled about the ground screaming. I know alot of people that have said they actually prefer the live show to their records.

We went to see Weeliz play in the Halt Bar on Friday night for free and I think they might have topped gay vs you in the live show league. I don't really want to try describe their sound, you should just click the weenliz link above to hear them. For starters their drummer was wearing a black mask that he couldn't see out of and sparkly sequin dress. I think he was also chained up. The bassist was wearing a dress and was pounding some toy drill sort of thing when he wasn't playing his guitar. Kenny the guitarist was thrashing at his guitar strings with a butchers knife and drilling holes in it. He even let people in the crowd have a shot of the drill. The girl in the band was wearing a lovely dress and screaming down the microphone like I've never heard before. William, played about with a sampler and rolled about the groud chanting and knocking over pints. Every one in the crowd piled on top of him a number of times. I got covered in beer and kicked in the face. He was flying all over the place literally. At one point I seen him in the corner of my eye fly by me and nearly knock over a table full of drinks. All through the show there was a strobe light flashing like mad that could easily have given someone a fit. At the end of the show someone thought they were Kurt Covain and smashed Kennys guitar into pieces.

I came out just thinking wow that was amazing and I didn't even have to spend any money. I can't even find any videos of them anywhere on the net.

Props to Tayside Mental Helath too. They played before Weenliz and put on an awesome show.

The next Weenliz show is on October 14th at the Ivy bar. Everyone should come along it's a Cry parrot night and it's only 4 quid.

Banksy's Village Pet Shop and Grill

This is pretty much a re-post from wooster but if you haven't seen or heard already Banksy has a new gallery type thing in New York disguised as a sort of Pet shop.

This is pretty different to what he's ever done before. I had no clue it was Banksy until I read it on wooster collective. No graffiti style painting and not even any signature Banksy rats. After seeing alot of new banksy murals and works since he's been in New York i've noticed a definite change in style. Makes me wonder if it is actually Banksy that's responsible for alot of these

Husbands and Wife duos

After the excellent Daedelus show on Sunday we met up with him after and walked him up to his hotel. We had an excellent chat. He told us about his Wife and how she was a talented musician herself. Apparently it's her voice that appears all over the new Flying Lotus record. Anyway daedelus and his wife Laura have a project called The Long Lost. They've got their first single out soon and a US tour in the pipeline.

This got me thinking about another Husband and Wife duo. Lullatone. If you didn't know Lullatone are a duo from Nagoya Japan who make sweet, cute pop songs. They use lots of kids instruments and record alot of the noises you hear around their house.

Lullatone do music for Japanese TV shows, art exhibitions and jingles for the radio. I think I'll buy the new album they have out when I can afford to start spending instead of constant saving.

Some news

A few new things have came up recently. I think 'm going to be organising a Wednesday night club night in the flying duck. I'll be doing this with my mate Jinty. It might be called Hairy Bones but I'm not sure yet. I think it'll be mainly a breakcore and experimental electronic night. I hope this works out as we've been wanting to do it for a while. Two days after being offered a slot in the duck, Stevie who puts on the Rug Cutting nights asked me if I wanted to do a night with him. I couldn't resit. As far as I know we're going to be doing a regular night at the start of the month from february. Stevie emailed 13th note today to block book our slot. Even though it seems like a long way away it'll give us time to promote it loads and to figure out who we're putting on.

Anyway stay tuned for details.

Daedelus

I think tonight we're going to see a dude called Daedelus. I just learned about his music today, he's pretty awesome and seems like a nice guy. Here's a video of him on xlr8r.

Breakcore

If you've ever met me in real life then you would have most probably met my mate Jinty. Even if you've only met him once you'll probably find out that he loves breakcore music. This usually comes about when people ask the question "what music do you like". As alot of people don't know what breakcore is, he usually has to explain the whole genre to them and explain what the amen break is. He was the one that introduced me to the genre and told me about this short film called "Notes on Breakcore". This film will give alot of people a better understanding of breakcore and an introduction to alot of the big artists in the scene. I just got round to watching this today and it's such a rad video.

No More spending

If you read the calender post that I did a few days ago you'd realise that I've got quite alot on in the coming months. Most of the things I plan to do will cost alot of money, so therefor I can't really afford to be buying things like records, T shirts, cinema tickets, nice meals out and prints for my room. I just can't seem to stop myself though. I've been spending far too much money. Today though I'm glad I spent money on an EP titled "Red State" by Gowns.

It's members of Amps for Christ and Mae Shi doing this beautiful, smart, noise thing, fused with pop to create something that I think on their own both bands couldn't achieve.

Beijing Skinheads

Vice have been doing quite alot of punk related posts recently, especially about the californian hardcore punk scene and punk in Eastern Europe.

Here's a video they posted today about skinheads from Beijing. I just liked the mix of military dudes with SKINS dudes in this video. The songs by a band called Misandao. They are the only OI! punk type band in the whole of Beijing.

It looks awesome, I wonder if the sales will go up or down

I was talking with a friend last night about the name face shred'r and how it would be such a rad DJ name. So I decided that he can use the name when he's DJ'ing at shows or whatever. Keep your eyes peeled. I think he is going to be doing a jungle set on subcity radio soon. I'll post more details when I find out more about it.

September Weekend

Everyone seems to be off, doesn't really make much of a difference to me because i usually get mondays and fridays off anyway. It'll be good to be out with people that don't usually come out on a Thursday night.

Anyway if your in Glasgow tonight you should get yourself along to this awesome night at the Flying Duck called Croc Madame Vs. Croc Monsieur.

Expect mad noise, dub step and every other sound.

The last time we went was really awesome and they had rad installations like this dude:

If you didn't already know The flying duck is one of the best alternative clubs/venues in Glasgow. Our friends from London are coming up this week, so I think we're going to take them to a night called "You and Me" at the duck.

They've also got some new regular club nights their now so you should keep checking back to their myspace for more info or whatever.

My room has just been painted and the fumes are making me super dizzy. I think i'll upload some pictures of my room when it's finished.

Wizards

I posted the film heavy traffic a while back because I was done trying to describe it to people and to let people know that it was such a rad film. After posting about it I was told about other films that Ralph Bakshi has done. Apart from heavy traffic my next favourite is the 1977 film Wizards. You should click the link to find out more about it because just like heavy traffic this films is really hard to explain too. It's really awesome though so you should watch it.

The month of December is going to be an exciting one. I'm off to Berlin with my mum for a few days. Theres so much I want to check out. And at the start of December I plan on trecking down to Butlins holiday camp for the All tomorrow's Parties nightmare before christmas special. This is just a post to ask if anyone at all wants to come down with me.

The line-up looks amazing for this one. I'm extra excited about seeing squarepusher, the dirtbombs, butthole surfers, teenage jesus and the jerks and the damned.

The tickets are only £160. That includes your 3 day ticket and a room in the holiday camp. I know alot of people are usually short on cash around that time of the year but it'll definetly be worth it.

I think i'll also be down in london just before Christmas too.

Can't wait for December to come now.

James Holden

Last night we went to see James Holden at Stereo in Glasgow. It was a sold out show and we managed to get in for free due to our major hustling skills. His set was awesome and lasted about 3 hours. we showed up pretty late so spent the whole show crushed in at the side of the venue.

Stereo is such a rad venue for electronic acts. It just generally looked good as well as sounding good. It looked like something from some early 90's rave film. Bricks in the walls showing and pipes on the ceiling that looked as if they were going to fall at any minute.

During the set there was constant "fuck erol alkan" chants. This is because Erol Alkan was playing a set at the arches and alot of people decided to go to that instead. Or maybe just alot of James Holden fans hate Erol Alkan.

The funny thing is these adverts were actually made on macs. What a failure. And they didn't even get anyone good to be in the adverts. Nothing beats mitchell and web in the apple series of adverts.

Straight up witch-craft

You might have read in other posts that I'm currently "doing up" my room in my mums house. I've decided I'm going to keep things simple with white walls, wooden floor, single bed and couch. No other furniture. No tv. I want it to feel like a hospital or an art gallery but without the strange smell they both have.

I decided I needed some pictures. Even hospitals have pictures, even if there just posters with a dirty lung on it.

I bought my first picture for my wall today. I'ts really gothic and satanic. I think its going to go above my bed.

It was only £5 and it's by a guy called French. He does alot of graphics for skateboard stuff and graphic design for alot of black metal gigs.

I don't have a clue of what other stuff I want on my walls
if you have any ideas or have seen some rad prints or photos let me know.

Original members Howard Devoto, Dave Formula, Barry Adamson and John Doyle are to be joined by an as yet unnamed guest guitarist, to walk in the not inconsiderable footsteps of the departed, and sadly missed, John McGeoch.

It is the first time Magazine have played live together since 1980.

Enduringly credible, Magazine have always been the connoisseur’s choice and have been frequently name checked by some of the most gifted musicians of recent years including Radiohead, Morrissey, Jarvis Cocker, U2 & Maximo Park. This year, NME.com included Magazine in a poll as one of the most influential bands of all time.

Magazine’s front man, Howard Devoto co-formed Buzzcocks with Pete Shelley after the pair had seen The Sex Pistols in early 1976 and promoted the now legendary Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall gigs. Devoto left in 1977, after the seminal "Spiral Scratch" EP had been released, and created Magazine. Their first record was the post-Punk anthem "Shot By Both Sides".

Four ground breaking albums later and the band had parted company, leaving behind an influential body of work which was re-released by Virgin EMI last year to critical acclaim.

The concerts are being staged in association with The Gig Cartel and wire-sound and will be recorded for possible release later in 2009."

Hand me downs

when it comes to the stage where I'm two weeks late in giving people money I owe them I always seem to be greeted with "it's about time" or "Where's my money". But today when I went to give my mate Mark back 20 quid I owed him, he greeted me at the door with a massive bundle of Vice Magazine back issues and the entire Daniel Johnston collection.

The story is that he started collecting Vice a couple of years ago and then moved in with his girlfriend. His girlfriend then through out his whole collection because of not having enough space for storage or something. So he started collecting again. He said that their having problems with storage again and have to much junk. He asked if i'd look after them for a while just incase his girlfriend tries to get rid of them again.

So I did. There's a good few weeks of reading here and alot of the issues are from a few years back that I've never read or seen before. Was such a struggle getting them up the road.

Here's a few issues I layed out across my floor.

I can't wait to get started on these and the Daniel Johnston CD's. If you haven't seen the Documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" you should definetly get yourself a copy.

Momus did a post today that I was very interested in, about a project called exactitudes. In short this project is about the striking dress codes of various social groups.

This is what their about section on the website says:

"Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek have worked together since October 1994. Inspired by a shared interest in the striking dress codes of various social groups, they have systematically documented numerous identities over the last 13 years. Rotterdam's heterogeneous, multicultural street scene remains a major source of inspiration for Ari Versluis and Ellie Uyttenbroek, although since 1998 they have also worked in cities abroad.

They call their series Exactitudes: a contraction of exact and attitude. By registering their subjects in an identical framework, with similar poses and a strictly observed dress code, Versluis and Uyttenbroek provide an almost scientific, anthropological record of people's attempts to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity. The apparent contradiction between individuality and uniformity is, however, taken to such extremes in their arresting objective-looking photographic viewpoint and stylistic analysis that the artistic aspect clearly dominates the purely documentary element. "

I've been interested in social groups and other peoples opinions/perceptions of them for a while now. Like Momus said, it would be fun to see what social group the creators of exactitudes would put you into.

I took an hour and went through all the different groups.

I guess I would say the way I usually dress is a combination of pocket monster, geeks and cassettes gang (maybe taking some influence from a few other groups too).

I have the flu. All day yesterday I was in bed watching re-runs of old programmes on channel 4 and browsing youtube for rad documentaries. I spent an hour trying to find that Red Road film on the internet but couldn't track it down. I ended up watching a documentary on science fiction novelist Philip K Dick. The guy is pretty awesome so you should watch it.

Capsule toy machines

Remember those machines that you could find outside shops or in the amusements. The ones that took a pound off you and gave you really bad toys or bouncy balls back. They were pretty bad, but sometimes the machines were designed to look like creepy characters. On a recent bus trip to London I found a few capsule machines that were in the shape of Snoopy and Charlie Brown. This made me want to find some more rad capsule machines. I like the ones that come in amazing colour combinations too. Bright purples with yellows and greens. I think now there actually giving out better toys, well ones that are Disney themed and maybe not as easy to break.

Majestic Dragon

Yesterday I posted the Ashes to Ashes video that was made by momus and Jordan Fish.

Jordan Fish is the dude that does alot of the design and animation stuff for MGMT, plus a whole lot of other web stuff too.

I tried to post the MGMT videos that he done here, but the embedded codes have been disabled on youtube. The songs get played so much on music channels anyway so everybodys probably seen them already.

Out of all the stuff I've seen of his, the Majestic Dragon series is by far my favourite. I can't stop laughing at how laidback the majestic dragon is. He done it with one of his buddies Victor Vazquez who wrote all the words for it.

My favourite song of the week is by far the cover of David Bowies "Ashes to Ashes" that Momus and Joe Germlin did for the Recovery Box Set.

I've heard so many versions, remixes and covers of David Bowie songs and this is by far my favourite.

Momus and Joe continued collaborating after making this song and on November 24th they are releasing an album together called Joemus.

I'm looking forward to this release and also Joe's other releases which are due out pretty soon.

Plans never work

I met the walrus

Most people at one point in their life have had some sort of Beatles obsession. Even if it's not with the music. For a while I was obsessed with the views of John Lennon, I used to spend hours browsing youtube for old john lennon interviews and footage.

I've had a thing for street animations for a while now. The one that got to me and made me think what the fuck the most was probably that one by Blu.

I love how much time and effort went in to this piece. You can tell by the changes in the sky that it obviously took him a good few days. But the end result was totally worth it.

Another street animation that i found equally inspiring was this piece by Sam3 titled "Water Kiss". I don't no about anybody else but i've never seen anything like this before. The music that goes with it is pretty rad too.

Refreshing Rails

It's really rare these days that I watch new skateboarding videos and footage that get me really inspired in the way that it used to. Everyone seems to be following the trend in skateboarding of skating tight/whippy banks in some amazing foreign country or blasting around a park at 90mph doing slash 5.0's and big bonelesses. All the credit in the world to the people doing that stuff, but no matter how big the ramp or rail it just doesn't get to me the way it used to.

Today though my friend Ian told me about a Japanese skateboarder called Gou Miyagi and linked me to his part in a video titled "Overground Broadcasting"(which i now know is a film by the far east skateboard network). In this part he shows so much creativity and board control. I've never seen someone have this much control on round rails. Even if you're not a skateboarder you should definetly watch this video part and try and appreciate how much skill this guy has on a skateboard. He also looks like he's generally having fun, which is pretty rare these days too.

Notice how perfect the spots and general architecture looks. So much nice looking marble.

Heavy Traffic

I'm probably one of the worst people at explaining movies in the world. Usually after explaining the plot of a film to someone I can tell straight a way that they definetly don't want to watch it. I don't no if it's because I stutter when saying it or maybe my description of the film is just generally bad.

One of the films that i find really hard to describe is Heavy Traffic. There is so much about this film i love, like the way it uses live action with animation as a "metaphor for inner city life".

so I've decided I'm not ever going to try and explain the plot to people again as it ruins the movie.

Can't get enough of colour

I am in the middle of decorating my bedrooom at long last. My first thoughts were to keep it very minimal and simplistic. My idea was to have no cupboard, shelves or drawers and just have a single bed, a couch and a coffee table. The walls i decided were going to be white all over.

However since seeing some DEKI Yayoi pictures from the YAMAMOTO GENDAI collective i have totally changed my mind.

Off to B and Q now to by some tins of greens, pinks and blues. This could turn out awful but i'm really up for some bright colours.

Youtube Anger

I think on a whole I get angry about once a week. Last week it was because my local shop changed it's sign. The new font and picture of someone doing their shopping is pretty disgusting and makes you not want to buy their over priced apple juice.

This week however my anger is aimed towards youtube. Everyone loves browsing youtube for hours. I don't even watch tv anymore, I just use youtube when ever i want to watch old episodes of peep show etc. For me though the best thing about the site is reading peoples angry comments. Especially when it's angry teenagers who think their totally in the right and that nobody elses points matter. I like when their youtube arguments go into caps lock, that shows major rage.

This fun is all over now. Youtube have decided to ban all comments that contain abuse. You won't even be able to do the classic habo hotel swearing as they've banned all misspelled words too.

I think this will have me on a downer for at least half the day. I hope i can still enjoy my lunch.

Comic to stop kids File sharing

The National Center for State Courts have produced a ridiculous comic to stop kids from downloading and sharing music on the internet. I bet they were sitting thinking "oh we have a problem here with kids downloading music, how do we get them to listen? Oh I know kids love comics, that'll work". Kids love comics about super heroes saving lifes and getting the girl. Not about a girl called Megan who ends up in court after downloading her favourite music. Whats worse is that they are trying to make a profit from this by selling the comic. Well they have made it viewable in a PDF file, but still I don't think this comic will encourage kids to stop downloading music.

Still the judge in the comic does have an awesome beard and one of the characters has a jacket that's identical to mine.

Flat Wanted

My friend Jinty and I have started looking for a two bedroomed flat in the Glasgow area. If anyone is renting or knows of anyone that is renting out their flat please get in touch.

This is a pretty big step for both of us as neither of us have lived by ourselves before.

I think i'm getting ahead of myself as i'm already thinking of ikea furniture and we've not even been for a first viewing.

For most people when thinking of buying furniture ikea always seems to be their first choice. I started browsing through catalouges and noticed something that momus had posted a while back. I think he's totally right and i decided to repost the chain of adverts ikea had out a while back titled "stop being so english" as i find them pretty funny.

Anyway as I said i'm in desperate need of finding a two bedroom flat in Glasgow, preferably an area near a subway stop or bus stop with a good/regular service.

Bike rack attack

Last week i went thrift and record shopping with my friend Chris along byres road. I came across the first Talking Heads album that had been produced by Brian Eno. "More songs about Buildings and Food", i then started thinking about what David Byrne was up to these days.
Last thing i heard was that he had created a sound installation called "playing the building"
In short he turned a building in new york into one big rad musical instrument.

After googling him for more than two hours and re-obsessing over Byrnes awesome solo stuff i came to learn that he was a cycling enthusiast. Like me he was annoyed at the fact you end up having to chain your bike to rusty lampposts and school railing where raging 12 year olds try to steal your wheels and handle bar grips. The goverment are encouraging people to cycle or walk to work instead of taking the bus, but the lack of bike racks doesn't help much.

He decided to team up with the new york city of tranportation and design attractive looking bike racks for the city.

I wish someone would do something like this in Glasgow, would look tonnes better than the little black bike racks that are almost always full.
